FIFTEEN

GABRIEL

We sat for a while around the kitchen table after the detectives left, and Myrna curled her legs up to her chest.

“Nasty business this,” Sybell stated plainly. “I wonder what they’ll find.”

“Why are they asking us all these questions?” I mumbled. “If we knew why this had happened to Benny, we’d have told them.”

“We might not know that we know,” Myrna replied.

“How can we not know that we know something?”

“Stop it, you two.” Sybell rose from her chair. “You’ll give me a headache.”

I watched as she walked over to the sink and put her mug down in it. “I didn’t know that you’d seen him argue with Gizela Aldworth,” I said.

“Me either,” Myrna piped up.

“I’d mostly forgotten about it, to be honest. It was probably nothing. They’re both proud people. It’s not unusual for egos to clash every so often.” Sybell glanced up at the clock on the wall, then turned to us. “Haven’t you two got work to be getting on with? Land to check. Pond scum to analyse.”

I turned to Myrna. “You’re analysing pond scum?”

“The algae,” she clarified, then she downed the rest of her drink. “You want to help me, Sybell?”

“I would rather paddle naked in the North Sea, my dear, but I’ll bake something for us, eh? Cheer us up a bit.”

“Something with chocolate,” Myrna said as she hopped to her feet.

“No chocolate,” I countered. “We don’t have any, anyway.”

“I bought some last time we were at the shops,” Myrna said. She fixed her gaze on me, and I gave her a smile. “You ate it?”

“Might have done.”

“That was cooking chocolate, Gabe. Why would you eat that? Disgusting.”

“Out of my kitchen, the pair of you.” Sybell grabbed a tea towel and herded us away from the table and over to the front door.

“It didn’t taste very nice,” I admitted as we sat and pulled our boots on. “I really wanted some chocolate.” It had been bitter, but I’d gone through almost the whole bar, anyway.

“You’re an animal,” Myrna told me. She pulled her coat on and stuffed her hands in her pockets. “Where will you be?”

I jerked my head towards the east. “I’m going to check out the saplings. You’ll be at the pond most of the morning?”

She nodded, a slight wrinkle on her nose. “I want newts this year.”

“You’ve got your phone on you?” I checked.

She patted her pocket with a smile. “I’ll see you for lunch, then.”

“Don’t fall in the pond.”

She stuck her tongue out at me and left the house first. I called goodbye to Sybell and then left, spotting Myrna vanish in between the trees on her way to the pond down near the bottom of the hill. I pulled my gloves on, breathed in the fresh air, and headed along the hill to where I’d planted new trees amongst some of the older ones in the woodlands.

It was easy to forget about everything that had happened once I started working. All I had to do was check on the trees, reinforce a few supports, and not think about Benny or what had happened to him.
